Living room

Aim for at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs to rest on the rug, so the seating feels connected. Leave some bare floor showing around the edges of the room.

Bedroom

Place the rug under the lower two-thirds of the bed, so it extends at least 18–24 inches (45–60 cm) beyond each side where your feet land in the morning.

Dining room

Choose a rug that extends at least 24 inches (60 cm) beyond the table on every side, so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out.

Hallways

Leave about 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) of floor visible on each side of a runner.

Tip: Mark the rug's outline on the floor with painter's tape before you order, and live with it for a day.
