How a hand-tufted rug is made
The design. Each design is drawn full-size onto a cotton backing cloth, stretched tight on an upright frame.
Tufting. Working colour by colour, our artisans follow the drawing and push wool yarn through the backing with a hand-held tufting tool, row after row, until the whole design is filled in.
Backing. A second backing is fixed to the reverse to lock every tuft in place and give the rug its weight and body.
Shearing and carving. The pile is sheared to an even height, then the edges of the pattern are carved by hand so every line is crisp. This is what gives our rugs their soft, dense, velvety surface.
Finishing. Edges are bound, and each rug is cleaned, measured and inspected by hand before it is packed.
Why wool
Wool is naturally resilient: its fibres spring back after every footstep, so the pile stays even for years. It is warm and quiet underfoot, resists everyday soiling, and takes dye beautifully, which is why our colours look so rich.
Every rug is a little different
Because every rug is made by hand, small variations in colour, size and pattern are normal. They are part of what makes each one yours.
